A Clear Tax Refund Schedule, From Filing Day to Deposit Day
Your tax refund schedule starts on your e-file date: add about 3 weeks, or 8 to 12 weeks for an amended return. Here is the math, with examples.

In This Article
How long does a tax refund take after you file?
The IRS says an e-filed return typically gets its refund in about 3 weeks. A mailed return takes 6 or more weeks from the day the IRS receives it.
Find your lane: e-filed and waiting (Sections 2–4); claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) (Section 5); mailed or amended (Section 6); refund late or smaller (Section 7).

Refund timelines: e-file, paper and amended returns
Each IRS timeframe depends on the filing method, and each clock starts at a different moment.

| Filing method | Status first visible | Typical wait |
|---|---|---|
| E-file (current year) | 24 hours after e-filing | About 3 weeks |
| Mailed return | 4 weeks after mailing | 6 or more weeks |
| Amended return (Form 1040-X) | About 3 weeks after filing | 8 to 12 weeks, up to 16 |

E-file with direct deposit is the fastest lane; the IRS says most electronic refunds issue in under 21 days.
Date filed to date deposited: count it yourself
🔍 How It Works: Add the IRS timeframe to the date its clock starts: your e-file date, the date the IRS receives a mailed return, or your amended-return filing date.

| Example | Counting rule | Illustrative date |
|---|---|---|
| E-filed October 15 | +3 weeks | November 5 |
| E-filed March 10 | +3 weeks | March 31 |
| Mailed return received March 10 | +6 weeks | April 21 or later |
| Amended return filed March 10 | +8 to 16 weeks | May 5 to June 30 |
These dates are our own arithmetic on IRS timeframes, not IRS-issued dates. EITC and ACTC returns follow Section 5.
An extension to October 15 gives more time to file, not to pay. For where your refund amount comes from, see our tax refund formula with worked examples.
How to track your refund with Where’s My Refund
The IRS tracker shows status 24 hours after a current-year e-file, 3 days after a prior-year e-file, or 4 weeks after mailing.
- Gather your exact refund amount, Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and tax year.
- Open the IRS tracker, your IRS online account, or the IRS app.
Return Received means the IRS has your return. Refund Approved means a date appears. Refund Sent means payment is on its way, though your bank may need extra time. The tracker updates once a day, usually overnight.
Why EITC and Child Tax Credit refunds arrive later
By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds on returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit before mid-February. The hold covers your entire refund, however early you file.
For the 2026 season, the IRS expected most of these refunds by March 2 for e-filed, direct deposit returns with no other issues. Treat that as last season’s schedule and check the IRS timing page for EITC and ACTC filers.
✅ Action Step: If the IRS sends a letter about your credit claim, ask an enrolled agent or CPA which records support each qualifying child.
Does the IRS still mail refund checks? What to expect
The IRS began phasing out paper refund checks for individuals on September 30, 2025, with limited exceptions. Most refunds now arrive by direct deposit, which the IRS paper-check phase-out page calls the fastest and most secure. To stay in that lane, e-file with direct deposit.
For an amended return, the IRS says allow 8 to 12 weeks, with some taking up to 16. Track it in the IRS amended return tracker, a separate tool.
Why your refund is late or smaller than expected
The IRS names five delay causes: a return mistake such as an unsigned form or math error, an EITC claim, an ACTC claim, an amended return, or an injured spouse relief request. Our guide to common 1040 filing mistakes covers the first.
A refund may also be reduced for prior taxes owed or past-due child support, federal agency nontax debt, or state income tax. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service mails a notice.
✅ Action Step: Contact the agency named on any offset notice, and ask a CPA or enrolled agent about injured spouse relief.
